Product details

These tools usually have a removable bit called a tap, although some heavy-duty models have a fixed end. The threads of these taps make them look a lot like bolts. When users use a tap wrench, they use an auxiliary tool to drill holes on the surface, and then screw the tap into the hole. There are two main types of tap wrenches: double-ended wrenches that look like screwdrivers with a tap on each end, and T-handles with a bar on top to create more torque when in use. The worker's tap wrench was a staple of manufacturing prior to the 20th century because it was one of the only reliable methods of piercing. As automated industrial manufacturing is more important than manual manufacturing, these tools have become less common. Even so, in many cases a tapping wrench is the method of choice for making tapped holes. Screws and tapped holes are made through a joining process called tapping and die. Tapping is the process of drilling and piercing, while dies are the dies used to form the screws. In some cases, a die-cast screw is used instead of a tap to create the thread; in this case, the process is called threading. There are two main methods of tapping, known as manual and mechanical tapping. Manual tapping uses a human tap wrench. This process is common on softer items, such as those made of wood or plastic. Most tap wrenches have a steel bit, making them unsuitable for any heavier applications. Manual faucets are usually solid metal drill bits. In general, woodworking is one of the most common uses of modern tap wrenches. Not only are the wrench materials soft enough, but many wooden items are still handcrafted.
