Forming Taps or Cutting Taps?

Compared with the cutting tap, the application of the forming tap is not too much, but the forming tap has its own characteristics and advantages, and the reasonable choice of the use of the forming tap in the production practice can not only process the precision guarantee, good strength, smooth surface of the threaded hole, but also reduce the production cost.

1. Selection and Function

(1) Processed material
Forming tap is mainly suitable for processing large plastic materials, such as copper, aluminum alloy, low carbon steel, lead steel and austenitic stainless steel and other workpieces. When selecting the use of forming taps, the machinability of the material should first be evaluated, followed by the diameter and tooth spacing of the tap to determine whether the material is suitable for processing with extrusion taps. For extruded threads, the smaller the diameter and tooth spacing, the wider the range of materials that can be processed, and the large diameter and large tooth spacing extrusion taps are only suitable for processing very soft materials.

(2) Tapping speed
The tapping speed of the forming tap depends on the diameter of the tap, the thread pitch, the hardness of the material being machined, and the coolant. We generally use the same tapping speed as for cutting taps, in the case of softer materials and fine threads. The speed can be increased to 1.5-2 times. When processing some large diameter and coarse threads, the tapping speed can be appropriately slowed down due to the influence of tapping distortion and lubrication effect.

2. Features

(1)  Forming taps have higher strength than cutting tap, it has the advantages of not easy to wear, long service life, low break rate and high production efficiency and cutting processing;

(2)  The forming tap forms threads through metal flow, so it has the characteristics of high thread surface strength, smooth surface and easy processing size guarantee;

(3)  Forming taps have self-guiding, can be used on the general wire equipment, but because the extrusion tap processing needs more torque than the cutting processing, the torque requirement of the tapping equipment is larger, and the torque required for the extrusion tap is generally 1 to 1.5 times that of the cutting tap.

In actual production, there was a period of time to use cutting taps, but after comparing product quality, tap life and production efficiency and other factors, finally choose to use forming taps. When choosing which tap to use, it is necessary to analyze it according to the specific problem so as to achieve the best results.
